Hi English 10-Donahue,

Make sure that your response is at least 5-7 sentences. Use the writer's last name when commenting.

  4. unknown,
what he is saying is that it is really hard to right poetry and it is also hard to catch a black cat in a dark room. so how are we supposed to right poetry if it is pretty much impossible. i do not agree with this person at all because anyone can write poetry but not everyone can catch a black cat in a dark room.

I really like this quote, because it's so true. A true poet doesnt't randomly put down words that he likes or that ryme to create a poem. Poetry is an art form that comes from your heart, not from your head. If one listens to what their soul is saying, any poem can have meaning. All a poet has to do is cooperate with how they really feel and what they really think, rather than what they think the audience would like to hear.

This was another quote that struck a chord with me, because I feel like that in english class, all we ever do is analyze everything, from short stories to books, and poetry as well. Poetry really should just be about becomming in sync with the authors emotions at the time, not disecting every word phrase and ryme.

I like this quote because this is true for almost everything. You learn by doing and seeing. Seeing other poets' work can help you develop you own style and compare your work. You watch first to see how it is done and then you can take what you learned and apply it to whatever you are doing. Reading poetry is practice and if you keep doing it, you become better.

  7. *A poet’s work is to name the unnameable, to point at frauds, to take sides, start arguments, shape the world, and stop it going to sleep. ~SALMAN RUSHDIE

This quote is very important. Typically, people tend to think they are above or immune to criticism or that certain [controversial] topics should not be talked about for fear of receiving criticism or creating conflict. This creates a lot of issues in the world. If everyone is afraid to talk about problems with the world itself or to tell their fellow human beings the problems with their actions, nothing can ever get solved. Poetry (among other things) is a great way to convey these messages in an artistic fashion. It is, of course, impossible to not anger anyone with whatever your message may be, but the delivery of the message is a great factor in how the message is received and this knowledge allows to people to talk about these things in a more beautiful manner which can earn respect even from the most opposing viewpoints, whereas just coming out and saying it can arouse a lot of dark emotion or appear too blunt.

It really reminds me of the quote: “There are few nudities so objectionable as the naked truth.” – Agnes Repplier

  8. With Quentin Tarintino’s quote “you can’t write poetry on the computer.” I disagree entirely. I Believe that you can write poetry on any medium whether it be a computer a type writer pen and paper or anything. To say that you cant write poetry on the computer is like telling someone you can’t drink water out of a straw. The computer is used to make things easier and to help write. It all depends on your preference but my preference is to use the computer.

  9. *The poet doesn't invent. He listens. ~Jean Cocteau

i agree. a poet listens to what is inside of him. poet isnt known as an inventor, just someone who accepts their feelings. listens to their inner peace.

  10. "Writing poetry is like trying to catch a black cat in a dark room"

I agree with this quote because writing good poetry is very difficlut, just like catching black cat. In order to catch a black cat in the dark you have to enable more of your senses like sound. With poetry you have to be able to write what your feeling, they both take practice. You cannot just run into poetry, thinking its a piece of cake, it takes much thought. I believe there are some who are natural poets, and others not so much.

  11. reading, writing and poetry are going to help in life because reading and thinking is learning. the more you read and write the more that you will learn about the world that surrouds you. and it will give you the skills that you need to succeed. writing is the best way to learn and think because it makes you think about what you want to say, how to say it, and in what format you should put it in to get your point across to the reader. reading poetry is the hardes type of reading. the reason it is difficult is because itmakes you listen to the puncution. but you also have to look at the way the poem is set up.so over all reading writing and reading poety are going to be very usefull for you but you may not know it yet.

  12. The poet doesn't invent. He listens. Jean Cocteau

I think a poet responds to the feelings they have about what they "experience". What they see fully, understand deep in their cells. I think it is like remembering something you already know but forgot that you know it. Like deja vu.

The trick is to be brave and honest as you recreate the "experience" using words, the brush strokes of a writer to paint a picture.

    And...

Writing poetry is like trying to catch a black cat in a dark room. Unknown

A poet must learn to Listen. Not only with their ears but with their eyes, nose, skin. Even the hair on our heads respond to experience. A poet must listen with the minds ear in order to "capture" the images that flow in as the poet fully "experiences" the happenings of their surroundings.
