Question: How is reading, writing, and studying poetry going to help me in real life?

26 comments:

  1. One of my earliest memories of poetry in my life was when I was 10, and I was moving from Mentor, Ohio, to Andover, Massachusetts. This move meant I was leaving my 3 best friends: Diane, Susan, and especially Carole. They gave me a silver charm bracelet with a charm of hands shaking as a sign of friendship. Along with this, Carole gave me a book of poetry called "Favorite Poems Old and New". From that day forward, poetry has been part of my life. Maybe it is a way to stay connected with her, a form of our friendship.
What reading poetry has done for my "real life" is help me to have some breaks, some "momentary stays against the confusion of the world" as Robert Frost calls those times when it seems that reading a poem somehow makes my life seem okay, bearable, just fine.
What writing poetry has done for my "real life" is to see, at age 34 (and beyond to age 49), that poetry is written by people that have a voice and that have something meaningful and authentic in their lives that they want to express to others, to us, to their audience. So, I write poetry because it touches others in ways that I may or may not know. But today, when I read my poem "Ballad of the Gold Star Mothers" (that I finished writing in early 1996 and have read at every Memorial Day parade in Plymouth since then, except for 2 when I read another poem I wrote), I felt humbled and grateful that so many people took the time to say how much the poem meant to them, even though they've heard it each year since they can remember. And today, the look on one Gold Star Mother's face makes my words the simplest and humblest of all. Her son was killed in action in 1995.
I study poetry that I might be an intimate and integral member of the human race. Poets find ways to express the exact feelings and ideas and moods, and experiences of what it means to be a member of humanity. I study poetry that I might stay connected with this specific art form, as well as learn about the history that has occurred and is happening with the human race.
Poetry has done for "my real life" what daily meals, contact and conversation with others, and breathing have done for me.

  2. Poetry has already helped me in real life. I write a lot, I have 7 notebooks filled with poetry that I've been working on since the 5th grade. I like to write whenever I have strong emotions, something serious is going on in my life, or if I'm just plain inspired by something. It's an alternative outlet to doing something destructive or breaking down. It's really helped me become the person that I am today, and I'll probably continue to write it for the rest of my life.

  3. the way that it can help you in real life is by letting you express yourself when you write it. if you need to let something out and you don't really know how then you can write about it. you can make it into a poem for everyone to read or just for yourself. when you read poetry you really see what some peoples lives are like and the way that they see things. they may see it the same way you do or completely different and that can help you look at things in different ways.

  4. Reading, writing, and studying poetry could possibly be the most important factors to learning in our modern society. As well as an academic stand point reading, writing, and studing poetry can also be used to express emotion. Poetry is great because expression can be thoughtful by using resources rather than on the spot and simple as is spoken expression. Unlike the spoken word, the written word can be saved for extreme periods of time. For example, Phoenician writing on papyrus, to this day we have ancient writing. Without that written word we would have no idea how their society worked because the spoken word is gone the moment it is spoken (excluding the memories of the conversees). Without writing every bit of information that mankind has gathered would dissipate over time. If we never wrote anything down laws would be forgotten, important history would be forgotten, etc. We write things down because of the vast amount of information there is to know in this world cannot be stored solely in the human brain so we store it in words on paper.

  5. Reading, writing, and studying poetry is important in our society because we are a society that is based on documentation. Reading plays a huge factor in this because if we are unable to read then we are unable to know the information on the documents. Also if we are unable to read then we couldn't read messages or indtruction given by other. Writing plays another huge role in this because without the ablilty to write then how could we document anything. Also without the ablilty to write there would be no documentation for us to read. Poetry I feel is the least important of these three because it is the most specific. Poetry is a form of writing where the author can express their emotions or feelings. Also I think it is important to study because it will allows to view things from a differnt perspective. Some people my think that a certain situation is scary while others may find joy in that.

  6. I like and agree with Emilie's post. I agree with the fact that poetry can be used as a form of stress relief and also it can help make people get into a better mood. Great job Emilie and thanks for your views

  7. Reading, writing, and studying poetry helps in real life simply because it expands your knowledge of communication. When studying poetry it can help you understand how to express yourself in literature. Poetry helps me because it's a huge stress reliever, it helps soothe my mind and relax. Reading, writing, and studying poetry is helpful in life because it can determine your future career or education. When writing poetry it reflects how much you read and study poetry. Being one who loves poetry your one who is usually organized, and well mannered, it affects your overall attitude and well-being. I agree with tommyguns485 that it’s an important factor to learning in our modern society, because you’re not able to learn if you’re not able to communicate in any form, or way.

  8. I think that one of the great "real world" applications of the study of poetry has to do with paying attention. Poetry, the reading of it and the writing of it, requires that we look closely, that we focus, that we sharpen our vision, that each word be exactly the right word. The world needs people who can slow down, really _look_ at something, pay the kind of attention to stuff (images, proposed legislation, political speeches, personal behavior) that leads to asking interesting questions, to engagement with other folks, etc. Maybe painting teaches us this, too...

  9. Reading and writing is part of everyday living. poetry is a thinking process that allows expressions and feelings. poetry isn't one of my favorite forms of writing but it is a doorway for things of greater meaning. Words are the basis of communication, and having the skills to be able to read and express them is somehting that as humans we need. In poetry words that are simple can have more then one meaning. I personally enjoy trying to find out what an author is really trying to express within his/her poetry. How much you read and write poetry is what makes you better at it, or that's what I believe.

  10. I also agree with tommyguns485 in saying that-Without writing every bit of information that mankind has gathered would dissipate over time.
writing is knowledge and as time goes on if we never recorded anything then it would be lost.Like a bed time story it is only a story because it was passed on through word. stories are not going to be the same everytime someone retells it unless it is written down. There will be changes and parts added or taken away from it. And with each change a part of something real is lost. Writing allows us to keep what is factual and correct.

  11. Thank you, Liz Ahl, for blogging with us! I really appreciated your observation about the "real world" application of studying poetry to people's lives: helping us to learn to "pay attention". That is is very like the views that I hold, which is probably why I read poetry so much of the time that I have "in between" things in life, like waiting in the car for someone to get out of practice, or waiting for a friend to arrive for a get together and I've gotten there first. Poetry lets me pay attention to the things in life...to "stop and smell the roses" or to notice the yellow swallowtail butterfly somewhat struggling on the sidewalk while walking my dog and wondering if I can at least help it to the grass where it might be safer and get its footing back, or somehow just plain listening...to life...and every THING that is LIFE.

I also appreciated xoxdani-lee769's comment that poetry could be a "doorway for things of greater meaning". That is very well said in reflecting how I view poetry and why I write poetry...and read it often...again...and again.

  12. Reading, writing, and studying poetry could help me in real life because it's a way of writing, discovering, and learning your thoughts and feelings. Reading poetry allows you to discover other peoples thoughts and you learn different elements. Reading from another persons perspective can be interesting. It's hard to sit down and read poetry if you're not really into it, but you can learn different things from reading it. Writing poetry lets you express your ideas and thoughts. When you learn poetry you read through poems numerous times in order to understand what it's about. Doing this you capture the meaning of the poem and learn what the writer is really trying to say. This is why reading, writing, and studying poetry could help me in real life.

  13. Reading, writing and studying poetry could help me in real life because sometimes the words i want to say out loud don't come out they way i thought they were. Writing it down in any form, even poetry, helps me organize my thoughts. Reading poetry could help by seeing how other people's thoughts pan out and it could help me with my own. Studying poetry creates a new way of thinking. Poetry is not black and white and people don't think in black and white either. Also, when you are writing poetry, you think of new ways to use words and phrases that could help you in later writing. Reading and studying are great ways to start thinking. Writing is a great way to get you actually doing it and makes you realize how your thinking process works.

  14. I feel that discussing poetry will help me understand longer works of literature. If you learn how to analyze the tone of a poem then it will help you find the tone in novels. There are many literary devices in poems such as similies and metaphors and finding them in poems will help me find them in books. I enjoy reading funny poem; they help brighten my day when i am feeling down in the dumps. Reading poetry helps me gain perspective on other peoples thoughts and feelings. International poetry helps me understand different cultures and their feelings. Also it is a good way to brainstorm before writing longer works!

  15. i agree with Tommyguns485 because writing is needed in this world. like he said if we did not write things down then a lot of things would be forgotten like laws. writing has helped us out in a lot of ways but you really do not even realize it. writing will also help you because writing is thinking.

  16. I look at poetry itself as a way to express ones pure emotions. Poetry allows people to jot down exactly what they’re thinking without the boundaries of sentence structure, hence why some poetry makes no sense at first sight. Poetry, if it doesn’t make too much sense at all, may have more figurative meaning in it than literal meaning; a simple poem can represent something much larger than itself. Poetry is, figuratively, a puzzle with clay pieces since it is up to the reader to shape the greater meaning of the poem or not shape anything at all. Poetry, because of these greater meanings and emotions, is good for expanding the mind. Frequent readers of poetry will often find themselves analyzing and pulling more meaning out of everyday things than the average Joe, in effect, giving them a greater grasp on what they believe. Thinking is good.

  17. I am reminded of this quote by Robert Frost: "A poem begins with a lump in the throat."

I haven't written much poetry in my life, but I love to read it. Reading poetry makes me feel things, like a tickle in my belly or a wiggle in my knees. And one of my favorite feelings- a feeling that it took me a long time to trust- is this:
Sometimes when I read a poem for the first time, I don't really understand the meaning, but it makes me FEEL a certain way, and I don't really know WHY I feel that way. It's kind of a helpless feeling. I LOVE letting go and giving into that feeling and re-reading the poem again and again.
Reading poetry brings happiness into my life!

  18. reading, writing, and studying poetry will help in real life because it helps you understand things better. When you read poetry people tend to analze and think about a deepr meaning which could either be good or bad depending on your view. But when I read poems i tend to break it down by stanza and try to understand more fully. This will help us in real life because it will tech us to take each problem we face or situation and break it down. I also think reading and writting poetry will help us because it will teach us a way to release our feelings in a productive way.

  19. reading, writing, and studying poetry is going to help me in real life becasue it helps to think about things adifferent way. I feel that poetry can be used as a way to express yourself through writing. If you can analyze poetry andfigure out what they are trying to say it will help you understand people and what they are trying to say. Writing poetry can be considererd a way to relax. IT helps you get in tune with yourself and how you really feel about a subject. Poetrycan help youthink outside the box and be more creative. Studying poetry can help you recognize patterns becasue poetryin my mind is all about the patterns. Overall poetry can help you be a better student and a better all around person.

  20. reading, writing and poetry are going to help in life because reading and thinking is learning. the more you read and write the more that you will learn about the world that surrouds you. and it will give you the skills that you need to succeed. writing is the best way to learn and think because it makes you think about what you want to say, how to say it, and in what format you should put it in to get your point across to the reader. reading poetry is the hardes type of reading. the reason it is difficult is because itmakes you listen to the puncution. but you also have to look at the way the poem is set up.so over all reading writing and reading poety are going to be very usefull for you but you may not know it yet.

  21. I reallylike Amanda's quote sentance "Poetry is not black and white and people don't think in black and white either." becasue it is true people don't think black and white and it comes out in poetry. in my first post i said poetry is a way to express yourself and ifyou aren't a black andwhite thinker then your poetry won't be either. Poetry is one of the greatest forms of art in this world and isa great way to express yourself.

  22. i think it will help in real life because it can help me think in a different way then i do normally. I totally agree with Amandas quote "poetry is not black and white and people dont think in black and white either." its very true people need to have variety in their thoughts and it cant be so strait forward all te time. poetry helps tell the kindn of person you are.

  23. It would help in real life because those a basic things you need to know in the future. Poetry is a way to express the way you see things or how your point of view is held. Depending on what your success will be in the future these will help. I also agree with Amandas quote "poetry is not black and white and people dont think in back and white either." The ways people think are creative. Full of life and color. Poetry describes life and color. Different people express their imagination in many different ways.

  24. Reading, writing, and studying poetry going to help me in real life at some point. I am not sure how, but I know that it will. I still do not think that writing poetry is going to help me personally, but I think that studying it might. Learning about poetry gives you a greater understanding of other types of writing. It also gives you different ways to interpret things that have been said and written by others. Studying it also can change your point of view on how to communicate later on. Writing poetry helps other people by giving them a different way to express themselves, but I don't plan to use it.

I believe some of the other people interpreted the question differently. I think the reading and writing was also in relation to poetry, not in general as a couple of the earlier comments suggested.

  25. Reading, writing, and studying poetry could help me in real life because information is taken in by repitition. Hearing something and saying that you'll memorize it won't help you at all in trying to recall it. If you repeat it to yourself (through writing and reading), you'll be more apt to memorize that thought. Reading, writing, and studying poetry could help you become more grammatically correct and expand your vocabulary. Since synonyms are often used in poetry, you could possibly express yourself in a more intelligent way. Instead of using a boring word like "nice", you could replace it with "congenial" or "gratifying". Writing poetry also requires a lot of thought and meaning towards what you're trying to express. Reading poetry may require understanding because some lines just don't make sense to anyone until they analyze the poem.

  26. In response to Mrs. Harlands comment, I have to agree. There are many poems that I can read over and over again and never get tired of, because they strike a chord with me that really connects me to the poem. It's always good to know that you're not the only person in the world who feels like you do.
